Chisholm CAN Purpose and Governance

Who we are

We are a group of local Chisholm residents concerned about climate change and the need for urgent action. We are non-partisan, we are not aligned with, or part of, any political party. Our aim is to engage with the local community and build a vibrant climate action group in Chisholm and fellow travellers.

We build constructive relationships with our local elected representatives to encourage enlightened, climate friendly policies across all levels of government. We hold regular, friendly protests and other actions to influence government policy.

We hold regular information events to help people keep up to date. We disseminate information on climate positive changes we can make ourselves, for example reducing reliance on fossil fuels.

We have regular social events, picnics and coffee get togethers.

We welcome new members and encourage you to participate as much, or as little, as you can.

Come along to any of our events and meet a friendly community of like minded people.

Statement of Purpose.

Chisholm Climate Action Network (CAN) is a non-partisan community group made up of local volunteers.  We are committed to leading effective climate action in the electorate of Chisholm in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne.

We engage with our elected representatives and decision-makers with the aim of influencing them to take necessary action to limit harm from climate change.

We take an evidence-based approach, focussing on the need to accelerate the shift away from fossil fuels.

We advocate for urgent action and support solutions which will help ensure a safe and healthy future.

Vision

Chisholm CAN aims to bring people together to educate, advocate and build support for climate action.

Independence and Governance

Chisholm CAN is a non-partisan organisation powered by community support. Chisholm CAN does not receive donations from any political party or associated entities.

At election times (local, state and federal), Chisholm CAN aims to facilitate community understanding of candidates’ positions on climate-related policy. Chisholm CAN intends to host forums where candidates  have an opportunity to state their policies and positions and respond to questions.

Volunteers involved in Chisholm CAN, including committee members, may support individual candidates in their personal capacity so long as they commit to the principle of non-partisanship when volunteering with us. Membership of a political party would not preclude a person from joining the Chisholm CAN committee. Committee members must step away from the committee if involved in organising a partisan political campaign.

Chisholm CAN is an unincorporated organisation. The Chisholm CAN Committee has overall responsibility for the activities of the group, including its financial management. Decisions are agreed to by consensus at committee meetings.

We may cooperate with other similarly minded community groups on particular campaigns where our aims align. The independence of each group in any alliance will be respected.
